Discover Gazatika
Accommodation in Gazatika
Gazatika offers a firsthand look at pottery craftsmanship: at the Corfu Pottery Ceramics Workshop, visitors can learn about the craft. The owners continue to make the ceramic products by hand and paint each one individually. This puts both the production and the design of the pieces in focus. If you would like to include this experience in your travel plans, check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
Craftsmanship and a musical occasion in Gazatika
An evening litany in Gazatika was also accompanied by a philharmonic orchestra. This offers a different cultural impression from a visit to the pottery workshop: here, the focus is on a religious occasion with musical accompaniment. These two themes offer different points of interest as you consider what you would like to discover in Gazatika.
Corfu as a broader travel destination
Beyond Gazatika, Corfu offers other cultural highlights. Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town is aimed at residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material on more than 80 attractions within the city. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.
The museums also offer a variety of perspectives. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum displays the Gorgoneion-Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis, created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. The museum was built primarily to display this pediment. At the Kapodistrias Museum, the permanent exhibition uses significant artefacts and documents to explore the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.
Nature and activities on Corfu
Across the wider destination of Corfu, there are also opportunities to enjoy nature and stay active. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 overnight stops. Those interested in a beach stay will find an organised narrow sandy beach in Benitses next to the marina, with facilities for people with disabilities.
Cultural experiences on Corfu can also be given different emphasis. In the historic Old Town, Casa Parlante recreates the everyday life of the island’s nobility in the 19th century using animated figures and replica furnishings and interiors. The villages of the municipal unit of Achilleion host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality; the specific programme varies.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to decide first what you want to focus on: are you mainly interested in learning about pottery craftsmanship in Gazatika, or are the Old Town, museums, hiking trails and beaches elsewhere on Corfu also part of your plans? These interests raise different questions about the best starting point. So base your search on the experiences you want to shape your stay. Bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route is listed for travelling from Corfu Port to the Museum of Asian Art; check the timetable before setting off.
