In Portsmouth, The D-Day Story is the only museum in the United Kingdom devoted exclusively to all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. The D-Day Story also includes the landing craft LCT 7074, which is open to visitors. The Overlord Embroidery tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 34 hand-embroidered panels with a total length of 83 metres.

Culture and history
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard looks back on more than 500 years of history and gives visitors a unique insight into Britain's maritime past. The Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum is located in the terraced house where Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and comprises three furnished rooms: the parlour, the dining room and the bedroom in which he was born. At the Hotwalls Studios, visitors can watch designers and craftspeople at work.
Southsea also combines historic sites with striking views. Visitors can explore the keep of Southsea Castle, which offers panoramic views of the Isle of Wight and the Solent. Every August, Victorious Festival welcomes major acts to Southsea Common.
Coast and views
Portsmouth's seafront stretches for four miles. It includes beaches, historic defences, open green spaces and a long promenade overlooking the Solent. The Spinnaker Tower provides a broader perspective: from there, panoramic views extend across Portsmouth and the Solent to the Isle of Wight. A 100-metre abseiling experience is also offered at the Spinnaker Tower.
Museums and collections
The Butterfly House at Portsmouth Natural History Museum is home to neotropical species from Central and South America. At Blue Reef Aquarium, visitors can experience an underwater world with clownfish, stingrays and turtles. This brings different ways of viewing things together: from historical events and human life stories to animal worlds from Central and South America.
Local layout and getting around
Portsmouth is flat and compact; many important sights are close to one another and can be reached on foot. The Military History Trail runs along the Hilsea Lines. Activities on the water include kayaking and sailing, as well as windsurfing and wakeboarding.
Getting there
Portsmouth International Port offers ferry connections to France, Spain and the Channel Islands. Alongside the city's history, museums and coast, the international ferry port is therefore also one of the area's defining facilities.
