Culture and History

Brighton & Hove Museums operates five venues in the city: the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Preston Manor, Hove Museum of Creativity and Booth Museum of Natural History. Hove Museum of Creativity offers family-friendly galleries focusing on memories and creative activities. Brighton Museum & Art Gallery presents galleries on fashion and style, twentieth-century art and design, and fine art.

More than 10,000 exhibits can be seen there, including a rare collection of historic model railways. The Royal Pavilion is a seaside palace and was remodelled by John Nash between 1815 and 1823. The Royal Pavilion & Garden combines Regency splendour with Indian architecture and Chinese-inspired interiors.

In Rottingdean, the Grange Museum has rooms dedicated to Edward Burne-Jones and Rudyard Kipling; the Grange Gallery displays works by contemporary and historic artists in curated exhibitions.

Smaller historic sites are also part of the picture. Rottingdean Windmill is a Grade II listed landmark on Beacon Hill, and the local preservation society regularly opens it to visitors. West Blatchington Windmill displays historic photographs inside the building, as well as a reproduction of John Constable’s 1825 watercolour.
