The Johanniterburg and its architectural history

Knights of the Order of St John built the Johanniterburg Kühndorf between 1291 and 1315. Its largely preserved upper castle consists of two residential buildings set at right angles to one another, a keep that has since been greatly reduced in height, and a kitchen building. Even without specialist terminology, the different parts make the complex easy to understand: the residential buildings, tower and kitchen building together form the historic building complex. The upper floors offer views across the Rhön and Thuringian Forest.

The castle barn also has a long history: the historic castle barn in Kühndorf was completed in 1538 by the Counts of Henneberg-Römhild. The cautious dating is important: the enclosure is associated with the Celtic period but has not been definitively assigned to a specific era.
