Breitungen/Werra brings nature and cultural experiences together in one trip: the Breitunger Lakes offer trails and birdlife, the Pleß provides sweeping views, and the museum and St. Mary’s Church offer insights into rural life and art. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on walks and scenery or on history and exhibitions.

Lakes, birdlife and views

The Breitunger Lakes Nature Reserve has a 3.5-kilometre hiking trail with seating areas. The trail’s length provides a clear guide for planning your route, while the seating areas offer places to rest along the way. More than 150 bird species live in the area. This makes it an interesting destination for travellers who want to focus on wildlife. Which birds you see on any one visit may vary.

The 20-metre-high observation platform on the Pleß offers a different perspective. In clear weather, the panoramic view extends, among other places, to the Thuringian Forest, Wartburg Castle near Eisenach, Hoher Meißner near Kassel, the Hessian Kegelspiel, the Thuringian Rhön, the Wasserkuppe, the Geba and the Dolmar near Meiningen. This lets you combine your outing with views across several named landscapes; long-distance visibility depends on weather conditions.

Cyclists also have a clear route to follow: the Werratal long-distance cycle route runs along the road towards Bußhof, alongside the Breitunger Lakes area. Check current route conditions before setting out. The cycle route and hiking trail offer different ways to explore the area—on foot or by bike.

Rural traditions and art

The Rural Traditions in Breitungen Activity Museum features period-room displays in living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens, as well as a classroom from an earlier era. The scenes explore various aspects of everyday life. Interactive stations in the writing room and the “Bauhütte” (workshop) also invite visitors to explore and try things out. If these stations are important to your visit, check with the museum in advance to confirm they are currently available.

The winged altar, dating from 1518, is a striking work of art in St. Mary’s Church in Breitungen. It features carvings and paintings based on Albrecht Dürer’s Small Passion. Guided tours of the church are available on Sundays after the service, at around 11 a.m.; they can also be arranged by prior agreement on request. Arrange your tour in advance if you want to include it as a fixed part of your day.

Practical tips for your stay

The hiking hut on the Pleß is another feature of the outing: it has 45 seats and serves light meals and snacks at weekends. At those times, the tower and hut are staffed by volunteers from the Breitungen branch of the Rhön Club. Since operating details may change, it’s best to check what’s currently available before your visit.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: nature and the hiking trail in the Breitunger Lakes area, the panoramic views from the Pleß, or historical and cultural insights at the Activity Museum and St. Mary’s Church. This way, you can tailor your search to the experiences that interest you most in Breitungen/Werra, rather than giving every outing equal priority.
