Hiking through heathland and highland vistas

The hiking landscape stretches from the Saale Valley to the Thuringian Forest. One notable option is the Hohenwarte Reservoir Trail: certified as a Quality Trail by the German Hiking Association, it follows well-marked routes through the district and offers an experience of nature. Uhlstädt Heath has its own distinct character. This 1,082-hectare nature reserve has well-signposted hiking trails as well as well-maintained paths, benches and shelters.

The Töpfersdorf church ruins lie in Uhlstädt Heath, in the Zeutsch district, and have long been a popular hiking destination. The Luisenturm offers a different perspective over the landscape: it was built in 1864 on the Hummelsberg, which rises to over 500 metres, near Kleinkochberg. From there, the view stretches across the Saale Valley and the Saale-Ilm Plateau, as well as the uplands of the Franconian Forest and the Thuringian Forest.

Water activities on the Saale
