Thalbürgel: Churches and history
Thalbürgel is a district of Bürgel and complements its focus on ceramics with important architectural history. The town centre is home to the monastery church, endowed in 1133; construction also began in 1133. It is one of the most important sacred architectural monuments in Thuringia. The Church of St Mary and St George in Thalbürgel is also an important Romanesque sacred building in Thuringia. The 4.5-kilometre Bürgel Pottery Trail runs through the historic town centre, past the Bürgel Ceramic Museum and local pottery workshops. It also crosses the Bürgel Esel.
