Orlamünde lies where the Orla flows into the Saale, right on the Berlin–Munich railway line and roughly halfway between Jena and Rudolstadt. The town consists of an upper and a lower town: the lower town is colloquially known as Nachhausen and lies on the B 88. The upper town rises on a long, narrow Buntsandstein ridge, 70 metres above the confluence of the Orla and Saale. Because of its elevated position, it is also nicknamed “Thuringian Bethlehem”.

Carnival, the castle festival and other traditions
One special tradition is the driving out of winter with the straw bear. It takes place every year at carnival, on the day before Ash Wednesday. Eighth-grade pupils from Orlamünde School lead the event; two bear guides escort the straw bear through the whole town. The procession takes about two hours and passes through the upper and lower town to the edge of town. Alongside the driving out of winter, Orlamünde observes the field procession, the castle festival and the kermis. A medieval market has been part of the castle festival at the foot of the Kemenate since 1996. The Kemenate also houses an exhibition on local history.
