Art and architectural history in Bleicherode

In the wider Bleicherode travel area, the church of Beatae Mariae Virginis houses the statue “Jacob Wrestling with the Angel.” It was created around 1710 and stands in a wall niche above the entrance to the sacristy. It depicts a scene from Genesis 32:25–27. Visitors interested in sacred art can consider both the biblical subject and the work’s placement within the church.

The organ in the western part of the church was built by master organ builder Robert Knauf. An extensive restoration in 2013 allowed the instrument to sound again in its original 1898 condition. Two points in time are central to its history: its documented original condition and its later restoration. This connects the craftsmanship involved in its creation with the preservation of the instrument.

Another point of cultural and historical interest in the wider Bleicherode travel area is the Alte Kanzlei. It consists of a large half-timbered barn with a residential section and a coach house, which bound the courtyard on its western and northern sides. The arrangement of the buildings makes the courtyard understandable as part of the ensemble; the half-timbered structure, residential section and coach house form distinct architectural elements. The Alte Kanzlei houses the town library, a music school and an exhibition on the history of Bleicherode’s Jewish community.
