The building’s history also reflects change: the earlier church was lost, while its tower endured.

Another historic link to local architecture is the 16th-century arched bridge over the Rodach. Together with the church and the protected half-timbered houses, it offers a different perspective on Ummerstadt’s history from the story of its former crafts. From the 18th century onward, pottery production developed into the town’s main economic sector. After the end of the Second World War, the production of earthenware and tiles there came to an end. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a 6-hectare open-air museum with four thematic areas: the monastery’s history; the half-timbered architecture and everyday history of the Henneberg region; and agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire castle; visitors learn how castle architecture changed from one era to the next and get to know Veste Heldburg.

Further historical highlights include the preserved palace garden in Hildburghausen and the Natural History Museum. The palace garden was laid out as a Baroque garden around 1700 and transformed into a landscape park around 1780. The museum has a vaulted room with a suit of armor and two-handed swords, as well as large-scale secco wall paintings depicting the legend of Hercules from around 1600. For active itineraries, different routes lead into the Werra Valley: within the district, the Werra Valley Cycle Route runs through the Werra floodplains and is especially popular for cycling downstream. The Werra Valley is suitable for hiking and cycling; downstream from Themar, it is also possible to explore by water.
