Hildburghausen District is an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreation region. Its permanent exhibition is arranged as a tour through the entire castle. Visitors learn how castle construction changed from one period to the next and discover Veste Heldburg. The preserved palace garden in Hildburghausen offers a different historical perspective: it was laid out as a Baroque garden around 1700 and converted into a landscape park around 1780. The Natural History Museum features a vaulted room with a suit of armor and two-handed swords, as well as large-scale secco murals depicting the story of Hercules, dating from around 1600.

The Rodachtal Border Region Museum opened in November 2009. Its journey through the 20th century takes visitors into the Rodachtal border region. The shift in subject from castle construction and monastic history to more recent border history highlights the diversity of cultural perspectives in the district.

Hiking, Cycling, and Winter Trails

The Mill Hiking Trail in the municipality of Straufhain is about seven kilometers long. It passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated; information boards at the former sites provide details about the mills. The trail’s length and the surviving information about the mills give the route a clear historical focus.

In the Werra Valley, you can enjoy hiking and cycling; downstream from Themar, water-based excursions are also possible. In Hildburghausen District, the Werra Valley Cycle Path runs through the Werra floodplains and is especially popular for downstream cycling tours. Winter sports enthusiasts can find more than 70 kilometers of cross-country ski trails in the municipality of Masserberg and its districts of Heubach, Schnett, and Fehrenbach, as well as numerous ski touring trails. Trail length and grooming conditions may vary from season to season. The region offers a range of activities: mill and landscape history, cycling and hiking tours, or winter trails.
