Church and historical traces
Reurieth’s church brings together several clearly distinguishable features: a late Romanesque chancel tower with a painted vault, a Baroque nave and an extension with a painted wooden ceiling dating from 1596. The ceiling paintings therefore appear in two different architectural settings: as a painted vault and as a wooden ceiling. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s different architectural features.
A document from 1171 mentions the Lords of “Rugerit” as owners of a castle. In Trostadt, structural remains of a Premonstratensian convent for canonesses have survived. The Schlossmühle is also one of the sights to see on a walk around Reurieth. Hiking and cycling along the Werra
The hiking trail known as Brunkel runs along the Werra from Reurieth (Drübendorf) to Trostadt. The “Jagdhaus Reurieth-Brünnhoftal” nature trail offers a thematic focus: since 2003, it has been possible to take a walk exploring native plants and animals, geology, hunting and history. The two options have different points of interest: Brunkel can be understood by its route and endpoints, while the nature trail is defined by its themes.
The Werra Valley Cycle Route runs from Reurieth towards Grimmelshausen and Themar, passing through the district of Trostadt. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between hiking and cycling: Brunkel runs along the Werra, while the cycle route leads towards Grimmelshausen and Themar.
The wider setting: Hildburghausen District
Hildburghausen District includes an extensive, contiguous forest area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the district is also shaped, among other things, by the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve. The Werra Valley in Hildburghausen District is suitable for hiking and cycling; downstream from Themar, water-based excursions are also possible.
