Manors, Castle and Village Church
In western Henfstädt lies the Zufraß Estate, also known as Hinteres Schloss (Rear Castle). The two-storey complex has a rectangular projecting stair tower. It dates from 1595 and was renovated in 1743; it is also in need of refurbishment. The building phases give the structure a clearly discernible history, while its need for renovation is part of its condition.
Osterburg and Hain belong to the Obernitz Estate in Henfstädt. Osterburg is a remarkable castle ruin, and Hain is an appealing hiking destination. This lets you focus your stay more on architectural history or on a hike.
The village church and the local history room in the former rectory are also among the sights. The church contains tombs dating from the 16th to the 18th century, including those of the Zufraß and von Hanstein families. If you plan to visit the local history room, check its current access arrangements in advance.
The Werra and Regional Excursions
Since 2004, water hiking on the Werra in Henfstädt has been considered a tourist highlight. At the same time, boating on the Werra in Hildburghausen district is prohibited until further notice. Take this restriction into account when planning, and do not assume a trip on the water is an available activity.
Hildburghausen district includes a continuous forest area within the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve is another defining feature of the region. The district is an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreation region. In the Rodachaue pasture landscape, the roof of the observation platform offers panoramic views across the meadows. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a natural landscape there.
The district also offers a range of themes for culture enthusiasts. The Henneberg Museum Kloster Veßra is a six-hectare open-air museum with four themed areas: the history of the monastery, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Burgenmuseum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is arranged as a route through the entire fortress and illustrates how castle construction changed from one era to another.
Another regional hiking option is the approximately seven-kilometre-long Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) in the municipality of Straufhain. It passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated; information boards at their former sites describe the mills. These destinations offer different points of interest from the buildings and sights in Henfstädt and can complement your holiday plans in the district.
