Shoreline paths and tours at the Zeulenroda Sea

The three bathing beaches at the Zeulenroda Sea offer different ways to spend a day by the water: boating, swimming or relaxing. The three-kilometre, barrier-free promenade runs directly along the reservoir shore. It connects the Bio-Seehotel at the Zeulenroda Sea with the bathing area on Bleichenweg in Zeulenroda, the Zeulenroda Sea motorhome site and the “Strandhaus da Rosario” restaurant. There are ten play and learning stations along the promenade between the Bio-Seehotel and Zeulenroda beach. They combine exercise by the shore with bite-sized opportunities for play and learning. For a longer tour, consider the approximately 45-kilometre Zeulenroda Reservoir Trail. It runs through the Weida Valley around both reservoirs; 89 percent of the route follows predominantly natural paths close to the water. This gives you a choice between a three-kilometre shoreline path and a much longer route with its own distinct course.

Local history at the museum and in the architecture

The Zeulenroda Municipal Museum has been housed since 1927 in the former home of hosiery manufacturer and Commercial Councillor Ferdinand Schopper. Its permanent exhibition uses selected objects to trace defining events in the history of Zeulenroda-Triebes and the surrounding region, from the town’s founding around 1150 and the granting of town rights in 1438 through to the modern era. The town’s characteristic trades and industries are also among the topics. Individual pieces, as well as fully furnished salons and entire rooms, illustrate examples of residential architecture from around 1830 to around 1985.

The Neoclassical town hall tells another chapter of local history: it was built from 1825 to 1827 to designs by Zeulenroda hosiery manufacturer Christian Heinrich Schopper (1787–1864). At the museum, by contrast, you can visit the former home of Ferdinand Schopper. The two men named Schopper are thus associated with different aspects of the town’s history. The Neoclassical Church of the Holy Trinity is also part of cultural life in Zeulenroda. If you are curious about a particular story connected with the town, a guided tour explains how the figure at the Karpfenpfeifer Fountain got its nickname. The Karpfenpfeifer itself is a popular photo spot.

Animal enclosure: animals and local nature

At the Zeulenroda animal enclosure, visitors can walk along barrier-free paths and enjoy a picnic. Animals from several continents live here, mostly in spacious, natural-style enclosures. In the petting enclosure, you can get up close to dwarf goats. A nature trail adds to the visit: information boards and models share facts about local nature. The animal enclosure therefore offers a different experience from the architecture and historical attractions in the town centre.
