Münchenbernsdorf offers nature and culture in distinctly different forms: the nature trail in the Eichert, the natural swimming pool and the Koala Climbing Forest offer a different focus from the town church and the Old Forester’s House. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what kind of pace you want for your days: should your stay be shaped by a hike lasting several hours, a boating option, climbing heights or historical themes?

Town Church and Historical Collections

The town church in Münchenbernsdorf is dedicated to Saint Maurice and was first mentioned in a document in 1260. The wooden carved altarpiece “Coronation of the Virgin” stands in the late Gothic chancel, renovated in 1907. According to its inscription, the panel was completed in Saalfeld in 1505 on the eve of St Margaret’s Day by Valentin Lendenstreich; the inscription identifies him as a pupil of Tilman Riemenschneider. The church’s early documentary mention and the later-dated work on the altarpiece thus provide two specific historical reference points.

The Old Forester’s House at Hinter der Mauer 9 offers a different glimpse of cultural history: the old half-timbered house displays historical collection pieces on all three floors. Visits are possible by prior appointment or on announced special opening days.

Hiking, Water and Climbing Heights

The nature trail in the Eichert is about 6.5 km long. The hike starts at Schöne Aussicht in Münchenbernsdorf and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. This makes the trail a several-hour activity that you can plan as a continuous hike. The natural swimming pool offers a small boat rental with three rowing boats and one swan-shaped pedal boat. If you plan to rent a boat, check availability on site.

The Koala Climbing Forest offers a more active focus, with climbing heights ranging from ground level to 19 m. This clearly distinguishes its height range from the nature trail: there, the approximate walking time and distance provide your bearings; here, it is the range of climbing heights.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Greiz

The wider destination of Greiz adds another distinctive cultural focus. The Upper Castle in Greiz has housed the permanent exhibition “From the Land of the Bailiffs to the Principality of Reuss of the Elder Line” since 2010. It covers the history of the bailiffs, lords, Imperial Counts and Imperial Princes of Reuss, as well as the associated culture of small-state residences. The museum offers a multimedia historical experience featuring a computer-animated history of the building and an interactive journey through time.

The Lower Castle in Greiz houses a museum and a textile demonstration workshop. Established in 1998, the workshop presents the production and history of Greiz’s textile industry; children and adults can take part in the manual production process. Thus, the cultural offerings in Greiz cover two distinct themes: the history of the residences and textile production.
