Landscape
The Rhin is at the heart of Engelbrechtsche Wildnis. The fertile marsh soils around the Rhin support vegetable cultivation. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Engelbrechtsche Wildnis can then continue their accommodation search.
History and Culture
The area was diked in 1615; the designation “Wildnis” remained as part of its landscape history. Johannes Joachim Engelbrecht bought the Wildnis in 1860, and from 1861 the area was given the name Engelbrechtsche Wildnis.
Poppenhuus is a historic farmhouse. Its name refers to a doll that a former owner inserted into the gable.
Agriculture
Gemüsehof Hauschildt offers a virtual tour of the farm. According to family records, vegetable cultivation began there in 1903. Vegetables are grown on approximately 32 hectares of open land; this is supplemented by additional production under glass and in a polytunnel.
Activities
Canoeing is possible on the Rhin for those who rent a canoe. Fishing is possible along the Rhin. A regional cycling route from Glückstadt passes through marshland landscapes with waterways, pastureland, old dikes and pollard willows, including the drainage ditches Weiße Wasser and Schwarzwasser.
Events
The Wildnis Cup includes running and canoeing competitions on and beside the Rhin, as well as several competitions for small and large teams. The family and children’s format includes games on a meadow. There is also a pursuit relay race around the Rhin and a 500-metre canoe sprint in front of the Poppenhuus.
Rhin in Flammen is a lantern procession around the Rhin in Engelbrechtsche Wildnis, accompanied by music and illuminated boats. Wildniscup and Rhin in Flammen are recurring events; the Wildniscup has been held at Poppenhus since 2018.
