History and Culture

Schinkel’s landmark is De Schinkler Möhl, which is also a popular regional destination. As a local meeting place, it regularly hosts activities and events. Originally, the Möhl was a grain mill; on 8 August 2004, it was inaugurated as a centre following extensive renovation and redesign. Finds from around Schinkel dating from around 4000 BC, including a perforated stone axe and other objects displayed in the Möhl, point to an early settlement.

The Protestant Church of the Good Shepherd was inaugurated in 1960 as a simple wooden church with a gabled roof and a distinctive bell tower. It is open to people seeking a place for contemplation. From 1784 to 1890, the Old Eider Canal connected Kiel-Holtenau with the Lower Eider near Rendsburg. Gut Rosenkrantz was formerly known as Gut Schinkel and administered tenant farms in Schinkel.

Agriculture and Regional Products

Schinkel presents itself as an “eco-region”. Local examples include a three-hectare flax-growing project that produces regional linseed oil. At Gut Rosenkrantz, the organic farm cultivates many fields in and around Schinkel.

Hof Mevs operates as a plant and goat farm with a cheese dairy and an oil mill. In Schinkel’s village centre, Hof Mevs also runs a flower field where visitors can pick their own flowers. Benches are available there for resting after a cycling tour, having a picnic and observing insects. The flowering season lasts approximately from mid-June to the beginning of October. Solidarity agriculture in Schinkel is based on an idea developed in 2000; members pay a fixed amount so that the participating farms can plan ahead.
