Sehestedt is a place whose history is directly connected with the Kiel Canal: The construction of the canal from 1887 to 1895 divided Sehestedt into a northern and a southern part.
The Sehestedt ferry provides a free crossing of the Kiel Canal for motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It is located at kilometre 75.331 of the Kiel Canal.
History and Culture
Gut Sehestedt stands on the grounds of an old moated castle. A manor house dating from 1728 is part of the Gut Sehestedt estate. There are also three thatched half-timbered buildings there that are listed as historic monuments.
The House of History displays historical sources, original objects, short films and special exhibitions. St Peter and Paul Church has a wooden tower and a largely late Neoclassical interior dating from 1829.
A memorial stone associated with a parachute accident involving Bold Guard near Sehestedt was dedicated on 27 July 1975 by residents of Sehestedt and Schotten.
Exploring the Area
The village circular walk is a 4.2-kilometre walking route from the Danish Monument to the ferry landing stage and along the canal to the KanalTreff.
The Kleine Forstrunde covers 3.0 kilometres through the forest, passes unusual trees and wetland habitats, and then returns between the canal and the forest.
The Energieparkrunde covers approximately 4.8 kilometres to the energy park site, where visitors can learn about renewable energy.
The section of the nature park hiking trail in Hüttener Berge Nature Park reaches Sehestedt after 36.5 kilometres.
By the Canal
Next to the ferry landing stage by the canal are a snack bar and a market meeting point. A motorhome pitch next to the ferry offers views of the Kiel Canal and ocean liners.
