Ruhwinkel combines a landscape of lakes, hedgerows and historic paths. The Fuhlensee nature reserve is home to reed beds, alder carr woodland and botanically valuable wet meadows. Fuhlensee is part of the Bornhöved chain of lakes, which consists of six lakes that are partly interconnected. Rare species such as kingfishers and broad-leaved marsh orchids can be found in the area.

Ruhwinkel’s landscape is characterised by a varied hedgerow landscape with beech and oak trees. A bathing area is located at Schierensee, north of Fuhlensee.
The former narrow-gauge railway embankment, locally known as Alter Bahndamm, is now used as a hiking trail from Ruhwinkel towards Bornhöved. Historic municipal footpath no. 5 runs from the village via Altekoppel, the old military road and Vier into the moorland. Historic footpath no. 4 provides a shortcut towards Altekoppel and the bathing area. In addition, Ruhwinkel has cycling and hiking routes that pass lakes and run through forests.
In Schönböken, the Lindenallee runs for 1.1 kilometres between approximately 240 lime trees. It is registered as a natural monument in the Plön district. The Iven-Kruse-Weg begins at a house associated with the poet Iven Kruse and commemorates his work.
To the west of Ruhwinkel, the former B404, now district road K43, runs between Bad Segeberg and Kiel. The A21 runs parallel to the former narrow-gauge railway line that ran between Kiel and Bad Segeberg.
