History and Culture
In the Middle Ages, the knights of Barmstede and later the Schauenburgs administered the region from Barmstedt. Barmstedt and Rantzau Castle Island have played a central role in the history of Southern Holstein since Barmstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1140. The settlement site on the Krückau has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, approximately 3,500 years ago; burial mounds remained visible until the 19th century.
Today’s Church of the Holy Spirit is a Baroque hall church that was inaugurated at Pentecost in 1718 and is an original monument from the era of the Counts of Rantzau. Organ, choral and instrumental concerts are held in the church, including an annual orchestral concert with choir. Its painted wooden barrel ceiling was decorated with biblical scenes in 1754/56. The Baroque organ was completed in 1720 and has approximately 2,200 pipes and 34 stops.
The Museum of the County of Rantzau is housed in a building that served as a district court until 1974; next to it is a former castle prison that was used until 1927. The museum presents regional history and the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked there in various eras. The Humburg House and the Kulturschusterei offer cultural and music programmes. In the 19th century, shoemakers from Barmstedt made waterproof sea boots.
