Discover Rantum: Nature, Wadden Sea and Beach
Accommodation in Rantum
Rantum is a holiday destination for anyone who wants to combine nature, the sea and a variety of activities on Sylt. The Rantum Basin nature reserve provides food and resting areas for tens of thousands of birds. In addition, there is the fine-sand West Beach on the North Sea, the Wadden Sea on the eastern side and a programme of events ranging from cabaret to music.
Nature at the Rantum Basin and in the dunes
The Rantum Basin is open to visitors all year round. The landscape is particularly impressive when explored along the approximately 9-kilometre circular dike trail. The path runs along the protected area and allows you to observe birds almost undisturbed. You should take the approximate length into account when planning your day if you would like to include the route in your holiday. If you would prefer to discover another type of landscape, you can choose the circular tour “Through the Rantum Dunes”. It leads through the “Rantum Dunes” nature reserve and complements the impressions of the Rantum Basin with the distinctive dune landscape.
The approximately 10-kilometre “RUN ums Rantumbecken” run also leads around the nature reserve on Sylt. This gives you different ways to experience the same landscape: on an observation tour along the dike, on a circular tour through the dunes or during a sporting lap around the basin. This choice can be helpful for families and travel groups with different interests, as not everyone has to spend the holiday day in the same way.
Wadden Sea, West Beach and Rantum Harbour
In Rantum, the fine-sand West Beach on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea on the eastern side are close to each other. At the narrowest point of the island, the open sea and the Wadden Sea are only around 600 metres apart. Rantum also offers 9 kilometres of North Sea beach for long walks along the shore. A roughly 1.5-hour guided walk across the mudflats of Rantum offers a different perspective on the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Visitors can discover creatures of the Wadden Sea such as mussels, snails, lugworms and small crabs.
Rantum Harbour is located on the eastern edge of Rantum on the Wadden Sea. The leisure harbour is intended for yachts and pleasure boats; at low tide, it falls dry. Anyone who wants to consciously observe the changing tides will find a striking contrast to the open West Beach here. The “Best of Rantum” tour combines several aspects of the village: it leads from Rantum Harbour along the edge of the Rantum Basin to West Beach and back to the harbour via the village centre, the Wadden Sea and the dike. This tour can also be started at the Rantum, Campingplatz stop on SVG bus route 2.
Culture and special holiday moments
Rantum is not limited to experiences in nature. The thatched Kursaal Rantum is an events venue where the “Rantum lacht!” cabaret series regularly takes place. The Meerkabarett in Sylt/Rantum presents programmes of music, comedy and cabaret every year and is located next to the Sylt Quelle hall. This allows you to complement a day at the beach or in the nature reserve with an evening of culture, without limiting your holiday to just one type of experience.
Another distinctive building is the Protestant Church of St Peter on Sylt. It was built between 1962 and 1964 and is the island’s only church with a traditional thatched roof. For a quieter break, there is also Day Spa Rantum, a branch of the Syltness Center. The Tourist Information Rantum’s information terminal provides information about Rantum and the island of Sylt early in the morning or late in the evening. It is also possible to book an e-bike, electric car or electric scooter there.
The right holiday apartment for your trip to Rantum
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rantum, you can tailor your choice to the days you plan to spend on holiday. For days in nature, the Rantum Basin, the circular dike trail and the Rantum Dunes are ideal focal points. If you would like to combine water and landscape, you can include West Beach, a guided walk across the mudflats and the harbour in your travel plans. For a varied week with different interests, the “Best of Rantum” tour, the cultural programme and a visit to the church are also options. The key factor is less a fixed programme than deciding which combination of these experiences you would prefer for your stay.
