Munkmarsch combines maritime history with a diverse coastal landscape. The village lies between marshland and the Wadden Sea, at the northern end of the FFH area. The small Munkmarsch harbor adjoins it there, while the village itself lies above the cliff coast.

A harbor village with history and maritime life

Until the Hindenburg Causeway opened in 1927, Munkmarsch harbor was the gateway to the island for travelers from the mainland. Today, it is a private marina and a popular destination for recreational sailors. The historic Fährhaus still recalls the former heyday of the ferry port. Calle’s Beach is located directly next to the harbor and is home to the island’s oldest water sports center. In Munkmarsch Bay, Calle Schmidt still offers surfing and sailing courses for catamarans and dinghies.

The Sylt Sailing Club is also part of the village landscape. A youth sailing group meets there; Optimist dinghies, dinghies and a Hobie Cat 16 were purchased for the young sailors. For visitors, this area makes it clear how closely Munkmarsch is connected with sailing and the water, without the village being defined by a single vacation theme.

Beach, mudflats and views

Around Munkmarsch, there are above all opportunities for walks through the coastal and tidal landscape. On the eastern side of Sylt, the village has a small beach area with fine sand. East Beach lies in a sheltered bay and offers far-reaching views, including toward Rantum harbor. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with peaceful impressions of the landscape.

Another distinctive point is the White Cliff of Braderup between Munkmarsch and Braderup. It serves as a viewpoint and a starting point for walks. Several hiking and cycling paths that lead through Sylt’s landscape are also located near Munkmarsch harbor. When choosing your accommodation, it can therefore be decisive whether you primarily want to admire the coast, stay active or connect different types of landscape.

Paths and little stories

Lügenbrücke is a small bridge between Munkmarsch and Keitum. It prevents wet feet during flooding and can only be reached on foot from Munkmarsch or Keitum. Its name goes back to the story that its unstable predecessor would once collapse if children lied while crossing it. Anyone who wants to combine a walk with a distinctive local story will find a specific destination here away from major sights.

Depending on your interests, this creates different kinds of vacation days: water sports in the bay, a path through the tidal landscape, an excursion to the bridge or a walk to viewpoints and historic traces.
