Kampen (Sylt): Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kampen on Sylt is home to Uwe Dune, which, at 52.5 metres, is the island’s highest natural elevation. A 109-step wooden staircase leads to its viewing platform. Uwe Dune can be reached on foot via a dune path that starts at the road Zur Uwe-Düne.

Nature

On the western side of Kampen, the Red Cliff stretches for around 4 kilometres towards Wenningstedt. At its highest point, the difference in elevation from the edge of the cliff to the beach is around 30 metres. The red colouring is caused by oxygen acting on clay containing iron. The Red Cliff and the heathland along its upper edge have been protected areas since 1979. Because of the risk of the Red Cliff collapsing, walkers should remain on the designated paths.

The Vogelkoje area has been protected since 1935. Kampen’s Vogelkoje is both a bird sanctuary and a museum. A circular trail leads through the forest, past the decoy houses, across a dyke and along a pond. Around 35 information stations cover the flora, fauna and history of the site.

Beach

Kampen’s beach area is divided into four sections. All of Kampen’s beaches have trained lifeguards, and public toilets are available in the beach area. Two designated dog beaches are located in the northern Section A and the southern Section N. Beach gymnastics, beach volleyball and beach soccer are offered at Kampen beach.

Culture

Kampen’s free art and culture trail leads through the entire town. It features 40 marked bronze steles with QR codes presenting artists and other people associated with Kampen. The Langer Christian lighthouse cannot be entered, but it can be viewed from the outside.

Paths and Transport

Bus route 1 connects Kampen with Westerland and List. The former island railway line offers a north–south route for cycling and hiking.
