Gröde: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Landscape

The Halligen in Schleswig-Holstein are regularly flooded during high tides; their houses stand on artificially raised mounds known as Warften. The Süderaue divides into two tide-dependent tidal creeks that flank Gröde’s southwest. Due to land loss caused by storm surges, Gröde is almost completely surrounded by a stone embankment.

Geographical Classification

Gröde-Appelland was created when Hallig Appelland and Hallig Gröde were connected as part of coastal protection work at the beginning of the 19th century. Gröde is the third-largest Hallig and covers 252 hectares. The inhabited Halligen form a model region for testing sustainable ways of living and working in the historic cultural landscape.

Culture

The Kirchwarft is home to the school, the teacher’s house, and the Hallig Church of St. Margaret. The church there was built in 1779 and contains a Renaissance altar from 1592 depicting the life of Jesus. The thatched-roof kiosk offers holidaymakers and day visitors drinks, ice cream, sweets, souvenirs, postcards, and books about life on the Hallig.

Nature

Hallig Habel belongs to the municipality of Gröde and lies in Zone I of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Habel is an important resting, breeding, and feeding area for numerous seabirds and is completely closed to tourism to protect its characteristic flora and fauna.

Activities

Fishing and mudflat hiking are possible on Gröde. Gröde-Appelland offers space for walks in the harsh, iodine-rich North Sea air. There are opportunities for swimming around Gröde.

Getting There

Gröde has no mainland connection via a causeway and no regularly scheduled ferry service. The Hallig is car-free. When travelling by public transport, Husum is the rail destination; from there, take the bus to Ockholm or Schlüttsiel, and then continue by boat. Excursion boats can reach Gröde only during the short high-tide period. Boats from Pellworm and Schlüttsiel can take visitors to Gröde for a stay of approximately 1.5 hours.
