Culture and History

Krüzen’s documented history begins with its mention as Crutsem in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230. St. Martin’s Chapel in Krüzen was built around 1300. From 1835 to 1968, the former St. Martin’s Chapel served as a schoolhouse with a teacher’s residence.

The place name probably derives from the Old Polabian *krusina, with the possible meanings “gravel site” or “buckthorn”. The local heritage includes prehistoric cup-marked stones at the sites known as Krüzen’s “oolen Heed” and “Steinrie”. In 1627, Krüzen was completely burned down by Tilly’s Croatian troops.

A village renewal programme from 1988 to 2000 was followed by the designation “Beautiful Village” in 2009 and 2012.

Landscape and Paths

The landscape around Krüzen and Juliusburg has medium to high structural diversity in an agricultural setting. The Krüzen landscape is characterised by a denser network of hedgerows and the Heidberg elevation located north of Krüzen; to the west, the terrain slopes down towards the Augraben.
