Nature

The Sachsenwald is a contiguous forested area of approximately 70 square kilometres in Schleswig-Holstein. The Bille and its tributaries run through the forest; there are also trails for walks and leisure activities. Aumühle is a starting point for hikes in the Sachsenwald. The Eisvogelweg begins at Aumühle railway station, passes the Mühlenteich area, follows the Bille, and extends to the Billetal nature reserve.

The Max-Schmeling-Weg is an easy 6.05-kilometre circular trail. It passes the historic Marstall and the Bismarck Museum. The Sachsenwald also has more than 48.4 kilometres of bridleways.

Culture

The Fürst Bismarck Mill, a former grain mill powered by water, has been preserved at the Mühlenteich in Aumühle; it was first documented around 1350. The Bismarck Museum Friedrichsruh displays historic Bismarck objects, including a reconstruction of his study with original furniture. The Otto von Bismarck Foundation preserves unique documents relating to Bismarck's political work in Aumühle's historic railway station.

Experiences

The Friedrichsruh Butterfly Garden includes a 450-square-metre tropical house with more than 1,000 butterflies. The park grounds offer space for walks, play, and outdoor recreation.

At the Lokschuppen Aumühle Railway Museum, visitors can explore locomotive driver’s cabs; changing exhibitions are displayed in a former suburban railway carriage. On activity and family days, visitors can try out a hand-operated rail trolley from the 1920s or take a short light railway ride in the locomotive shed. Outside regular Sunday opening hours, groups can arrange guided tours, rides on a hand-operated rail trolley, and light railway rides there.

The Sachsenwald Riding School in Aumühle teaches children to ride.

Getting There and Dining

The S-Bahn line S7 runs from central Hamburg to Aumühle railway station. From there, a 1.8-kilometre walking route leads through the Sachsenwald to the Butterfly Garden. The Sachsenwald can also be reached by taking S-Bahn line S21 to its terminus at Aumühle or by bus 333.

The Fürst-Bismarck-Mühle restaurant near Aumühle railway station serves dishes made with regional and seasonal products.
