Mehltheuer combines varied hiking experiences with unusual cultural destinations and significant chapters of local history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment for a trip with diverse interests can choose between longer trails, shorter routes, musical history and historic sites here. The combination of activity in the Vogtland region and discoveries that go beyond an ordinary town tour is particularly appealing.

Hiking Trails with Different Features

The 10 km-long Dragon Circular Trail starts at the sports field in Mehltheuer. It is marked with a green dot and the dragon Justus. These details help with orientation along the route; at the same time, the dragon motif gives the trail its own character. Those travelling with children can incorporate the trail markers and the figure into their shared hike as conversation starters, without limiting the outing to a single age group.

Another option is the shortened version of the Dragon Cycle Trail. It leads from Fröbersgrün via Klein Amerika and the Grenzweg to Mehltheuer, then via Schneckengrün and Kauschwitz back to Syrau. This also allows travel planning to focus on a section of route that connects several named places. When choosing accommodation, it makes sense to consider in advance whether the focus should be on the circular trail starting in Mehltheuer or on this route.

The hiking trail between Kürbitz and Mehltheuer offers a different landscape experience. From Thossen, the route climbs to the Reuther Linde; from there, it offers a view across the Vogtland region. In addition, the green-marked hiking trail between Kürbitz and Mehltheuer connects the “Vogtland’s Fruits” culinary trail with the Vogtland Panorama Trail at the Großer Weidenteich nature reserve in Neundorf. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors can thus choose between a circular trail, a longer connecting route and a route with panoramic views.

Music, Architectural History and Remembrance

A particularly distinctive destination is the 32 m² “Smallest Musical Instrument Museum in the World.” More than 350 historic instruments are displayed there, including a hunting horn from 1662. During a guided tour, visitors can also see the demonstration workshop, where plucked, string and reed instruments are made. This makes the museum visit interesting not only for music enthusiasts: they also gain insight into different types of instruments and their craftsmanship.

The Waldhaus is part of Mehltheuer’s architectural heritage. The listed inn, with its excursion restaurant and hall extension dating from 1898, is associated with architectural, local and social historical significance. Local history also recalls the Mehltheuer satellite camp, which existed in the former Mehltheuer tulle factory from 2 December 1944 to 16 April 1945. Machine parts for Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG (VOMAG) were produced there; the prisoners were housed in a barrack connected to the factory. This historical information belongs in a serious engagement with the place and should not be equated with a present-day excursion offering.

The Stephanus Chapel also tells of Mehltheuer’s more recent development. It was built as a wooden barrack in 1958 and has served the parish for Mehltheuer and Oberpirk ever since as a place of worship and meeting space. Together with the museum and the Waldhaus, it offers a cultural perspective on different periods and functions of the town.

Mehltheuer as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

When searching for a holiday apartment in Mehltheuer, you can therefore first determine your preferred travel rhythm: if hiking is the main focus, the trails mentioned above offer different routes and landscape experiences. If the trip is to have a stronger cultural and historical focus, the museum, Waldhaus, Stephanus Chapel and the history of the satellite camp provide different points of emphasis. This combination makes Mehltheuer a destination where active days and quieter sightseeing can sensibly complement one another.

If you would like to extend your accommodation search to other places, you can also include Rebersreuth, Bergen, Netzschkau, Rodewisch, Grünbach, Triebel/Vogtland, Bad Elster and Klingenthal in your further research.
