Markranstädt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kulkwitzer See is a local recreation area that opened in May 1973 and was created from a former lignite open-cast mine.

Water and Trails

At the lake, visitors can go diving, water skiing, sailing, surfing, paddling, swimming, and visit saunas. A 1.5-kilometre lakeside promenade runs along the western shore. Kulkwitzer See also has an accessible shore and an accessible entry into the water.

The flat circular lake trail passes playgrounds and water access points and is described as suitable for families. Near the viewing hill, the signposted forest circular trail branches off from the lake trail; it is a walking route approximately three kilometres long.

Nature

The Kulkwitzer Lachen is a nature reserve covering approximately 40 hectares; water covers around half of the area. The site borders the Elster-Saale Cycle Route, although access requires prior registration.

From the cycle route, visitors can observe birds in the reed beds and wet meadows of the Kulkwitzer Lachen. Scottish Highland cattle help maintain the meadows in the nature reserve through grazing.

Culture and History

Altranstädt Castle houses the Peace Room, where the Peace of Altranstädt was negotiated and signed in 1706. The local history museum documents the town’s history through written records, historic craft objects, and everyday objects. The Markranstädt Children’s Festival is described as the town’s oldest festival.

St. Lawrence Church in Markranstädt is a late Gothic, single-nave hall church built from 1518 to 1525. Its restored 1886 Kreutzbach organ, along with concerts, chamber music, orchestral and organ performances, and exhibitions, make it both a cultural heritage attraction and a cultural venue.

Local Attractions

Since 2016, bread has been baked in a wood-fired oven next to the Lindennaundorf post mill. The post mill remains fully operational and wind-powered. A themed playground is located next to the mill.
