Gohlis combines Elbe landscapes, a historically significant church and the history of the settlement. Those who wish to combine a trip with nature experiences, regional history and a distinctive church will find various points of interest here to consider when planning their visit. When looking for a holiday apartment in Gohlis, you can therefore consider whether your trip should be shaped more by a cycling tour, a cultural and historical visit or an exploration of the history of the Zeithain area.

Elbe Landscapes and the Origins of the Settlement

Gohlis and Zeithain are located on the southern side of the FFH area “Gohrischheide and Elbe Lowland Terrace Zeithain”. This means that a protected landscape area forms part of the town’s closer geographical setting. The Elbe also plays a role in the history of Gohlis: The settlement is said to have begun at a suitable Elbe crossing with a ferryman’s hut. Later, an inn and fishermen’s huts may have clustered there. This cautiously transmitted development helps explain why the history of the town is closely connected with crossing points, the river and places to stay.

Gohlis Church as a Historical Focal Point

Gohlis Church is considered the oldest surviving historical witness to the settlement. Its structure suggests that it originated in the second half of the 13th century or the first half of the 14th century. It was first mentioned as a branch church of Lorenzkirch as early as around 1250. For visitors interested in rural ecclesiastical buildings and the development of small settlements, the church provides a tangible connection to the older history of Gohlis.

Later construction phases can also be seen in the building. The small bell tower on the north side was erected in 1822 during major repairs. The interior of the church acquired its present appearance in 1861. From 1997 to 2000, the church was renovated and restored; since then, it has once again welcomed worshippers to services. The different years do not represent a single construction period, but rather several stages in the history of the building.

Cycling Through Gohlis and Along the Elbe

A family-friendly way to include Gohlis in a longer cycling tour is the Elbzauber cycling tour from Zeithain to Strehla. On this route, the trail leads from Röderau via the Elbe Cycle Route to the church in Gohlis. For orientation, it is also important to note that at the outskirts of Gohlis in the direction of Zeithain, you leave the Elbe Cycle Route. If you choose your accommodation based on a particular daily itinerary, you can therefore weigh up an emphasis on cycling, the church or further landscape impressions without combining the individual destinations into a single route.

Places of Remembrance in the Zeithain Area

The history of the surrounding area also includes places of remembrance. Cemetery IV at the Zeithain military training area, Jagen 84, can be reached via a hiking trail from the Zeithain districts of Zschepa and Jacobsthal. It was originally known as the “Russian Cemetery, Zeithain Military Training Area, Jagen 84”. From September 1944 and also after the camp was liberated on 23 April 1945 until the camp was finally cleared, it was used for the burial of Soviet prisoners of war.

At the centre of the Zeithain-Gohlis / Zschepa II war graves cemetery stands an obelisk erected in 1948 and clad in grey granite. This site provides a distinctly different focus from the church or the cycling tour and is suitable for travel planning that also gives a place to the history of the 20th century.

Choose Accommodation Suited to Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on your travel interests: For a culturally focused trip, the church takes centre stage, while cyclists can include the Elbzauber cycling tour and the route of the Elbe Cycle Route in their plans. Those exploring the history of the region can also take Cemetery IV and the Zeithain-Gohlis / Zschepa II war graves cemetery into account.

To the main travel overview: Zeithain.
