Borna: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature

Bockwitz Lake and the surrounding area form one of the largest nature reserves in Saxony. The former open-cast mining area around Bockwitz Lake was renaturalized after the mine closed, allowing unique biotopes to develop. The Bockwitz educational trail focuses on grazing as a method of preserving open habitats for protected species.

Culture and History

St. Mary's Church is a Late Gothic hall church whose construction began in 1411 and which was consecrated in 1456. Martin Luther's writing of his famous Ash Wednesday letter and his sermons there are associated with the church. Emmaus Church was completed in 1258 and is described as one of the oldest churches in Saxony. In 2007, it was moved intact from Heuersdorf to Borna and erected on Martin Luther Square.

St. Kunigunde's Church is a Romanesque, three-nave brick basilica that was built around 1170 without a tower or bells. Since 1999, its altar has featured a Late Gothic winged altarpiece from Görnitz. Wall paintings of saints from the mid-15th century were discovered beneath the plaster.

The Museum of the City of Borna is located in the Reich Gate and adjoining buildings. The Reich Gate was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1723; the complex includes a mining hall and areas with permanent exhibitions. The historic town center can be explored via two history-themed routes. They are marked by seven large information boards and four historic coats of arms, each presenting nearby buildings or places of historical significance.
