Lichtenberg lies in a valley surrounded by extensive meadows and woodland. Eichberg is the highest elevation in the municipality; from there, views extend towards Dresden, the Lusatian Highlands, Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains, as well as as far as the Czech Republic.

Parts of Lichtenberg belong to the designated “Kleine Röder and Orla Watercourse System” FFH area. Lichtenberg is located directly on the A4 and S177 roads.

Hiking

There are signposted hiking trails in Lichtenberg. The small park in the centre of Lichtenberg offers a place to relax. The Lichtenberg Trail is a marked hiking trail that begins at the hiking car park in the centre of Lichtenberg and crosses the municipality. From the 353-metre-high Eichberg, it offers views of the Dresden Elbe Valley and, in clear weather, as far as the Ore Mountains.

Culture and History

Lichtenberg was first mentioned in official records in 1350. Lichtenberg’s landmark is an octagonal church built in 1840 in the Byzantine style; its octagonal tower is 45 metres high.

Lichtenberg village church was designed by the Dresden architect Ernst Hermann Arndt. It has an elongated octagonal floor plan, a square west tower and a rectangular sacristy to the east. Inside, there are two-storey galleries beneath a flat dome, as well as an eastern pulpit altar. The baptismal font dates from around 1900. The organ has a case dating from 1844 and was built in 1907/08 by Eule, based in Bautzen.
