Culture and History
The centre is dominated by the Baroque church built in 1793, with 2,632 seats and three galleries. It is described as Germany’s largest Protestant village church, serves as a venue for organ concerts and other concerts, offers seasonal visits as well as public individual guided tours, and is one of the stops on the Via Sacra.
Cunewalde’s Umgebindehaus Park displays true-to-the-original models of Upper Lusatian half-timbered houses with enclosed log construction at a scale of 1:5. The park is open from Easter until the end of October. The Tourist Information Office offers guided tours there lasting around 45 minutes for groups of up to 15 people. The Tourist Information Office also arranges bookable activities at the village church, in the Umgebindehaus Park, in Polenz Park and in the Vehicle and Technology Museum, as well as guided tours of the village and guided hikes; hiking and cycling maps are also available there.
The historic townscape includes the listed three-sided courtyard Umgebindehaus dating from 1816. The three-sided courtyard houses an integrated exhibition on the Cunewalde engine works. The vintage vehicle museum presents around 70 historic vehicles built between 1910 and 1980. Concerts and theatre performances take place at the Blaue Kugel Cultural Centre.
Nature
Polenz Park follows winding paths through a landscape rich in ponds. It is also home to the remains of a Slavic fortification and a memorial stone for the writer Wilhelm von Polenz. Cunewalde lies within the Upper Lusatian Highlands Landscape Conservation Area.
Cycling and Water
The Spree Cycle Path connects to an 18-kilometre circular route through the valley between Czorneboh and Bieleboh. Cunewalde Adventure Pool has 850 square metres of water surface in solar-heated pools. Facilities include a large slide, a wide slide, a play cove, a climbing net, a play area for toddlers and a water playground.
The adventure pool is located directly on the Upper Lusatia Railway Cycle Path and offers a charging station for e-bike batteries.
