Göda: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The collegiate church of St Peter and St Paul is a Gothic hall church whose construction began in 1505–1517. Its present exterior is characterised by a widely visible Neo-Gothic twin-tower design dating from 1892; inside are altar and apostle works by Friedrich Press, as well as an Eule organ. In Storcha stands the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart, which was built between 1882 and 1887. The Cyrill-Methodius Association helped make its construction a matter of concern for the Sorbs. Storcha is a historically significant settlement on the Hohe Straße; Sorbian customs there include the Bird Wedding, Easter riding, Corpus Christi processions, house blessings and traditional dress.

Göda was first mentioned in 1006 as the Burgward Godobi. After the town came under the rule of the Saxon electors in 1559, Elector Augustus established the Latin school. It primarily served Sorbian pupils preparing to study theology. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 19th century, Göda was home to the Wendish regional court. As early as 1076, Göda was the second-oldest parish in the Diocese of Meissen in Upper Lusatia, after Bautzen.

In Coblenz, the Fehrmann Mill was built in 1626 and rebuilt after a fire in 1826. A guided tour of Fehrmann Mill gives visitors an insight into milling in a fully operational old mill.

Nature

The Schanzen hiking trail can be walked as one continuous route or divided into shorter sections. It is approximately 16 kilometres long and connects six Slavic hillfort sites within the municipality. The trail is designed to allow visitors to experience the scenic qualities of the Lusatian open countryside. It also explains the area's cultural and historical features and provides information about its geology, flora and fauna.

Crafts and Collections

Gagel Pottery offers a workshop where visitors can make pottery and paint vessels using traditional sponge decoration techniques. A guided tour of the studio and garden of Landhauskeramik showcases ceramics for the home and garden.

At the Treasure House in Lusatia, visitors are told the individual stories of the objects on display. The museum presents cultural objects from many countries, including fossils, ceramics, porcelain, sculptures and textiles. The Treasure House in Lusatia is housed in a former hereditary judge's farmstead.
