The Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen serves as a gene bank and living museum and documents the development of roses from wild species to modern varieties. More than 8,700 rose varieties and species are presented there in a display of form, color, and fragrance. The Europa-Rosarium is also described as the largest rose collection in the world.
Sangerhausen’s protected historic town center preserves a large part of its building stock from the 15th to the 18th century and maintains the town’s historical development in an almost unchanged form. It can be explored on guided city tours.
St. James’s Church is a late Gothic, three-aisled hall church built between 1457 and 1542. Its 61-meter-high tower leans 1.71 meters to the west and bears a gilded moon clock. The church contains a mechanical organ built by Zacharias Hildebrandt between 1726 and 1728; it has 30 stops and 1,908 pipes.
History
The Spengler Museum presents local and regional history through an almost completely preserved mammoth skeleton, Neolithic finds, and exhibitions on the region’s mining history and geology.
The Röhrigschacht Museum presents the 800-year history of copper shale mining in the Mansfeld region. At the same time, it makes the physical working conditions of the miners underground visible.
Nature
The Hohe Linde circular trail starts and ends at Sangerhausen railway station and is 10.5 kilometers long. It leads through mixed forests and meadows to the Hohe Linde mining landscape.
In Sangerhausen’s Wettelrode district, hiking trails connect the Kalmusgrund landscape, the Kunstteich pond, the mining educational trail, and historic mining features.
