Culture

The first documented mention of “Alstediburg” dates from the late 9th century. For more than 250 years, Allstedt Castle was one of the most important political centres of the Holy Roman Empire. The castle kitchen at Allstedt Palace is one of the largest castle kitchens in Europe. Allstedt Palace preserves traces of Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and historicist architecture.

The Wigberti Church has been partially preserved as a ruin; its well-preserved Romanesque tower dates from the 12th century. Originally built as a wooden church in the 8th century, it is one of the oldest buildings in the Golden Aue.

The Allstedt Palace complex includes a museum that presents the history of the palatinate, the castle and the palace in several exhibition areas. Its topics are presented in a child-friendly manner. Allstedt Palace also features an immersive multimedia presentation on the history of Thomas Müntzer.

Nature and Trails

Below the castle, the outdoor swimming pool is located by the Vorwerk Pond and serves recreation and leisure purposes. Hiking trails have been laid out in the surrounding forests and in the valleys of the Rohne and Borntal.

Allstedt is connected to Sangerhausen, Querfurt and Artern by first-order roads.

History and Crafts

The Allstedt Town Mill has existed since the early 17th century. From 1621 to 1623, it was used as a mint and later converted into a grain mill. Allstedt Mühlenbräu beer is brewed locally at the Allstedt Town Mill. When there is sufficient water in the millrace, the Allstedt Town Mill can operate its milling equipment using hydropower.
