Ilsenburg (Harz): Art Casting, Ilse Valley and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Ilsenburg
Ilsenburg (Harz) combines a long history of ironworking with hiking experiences in the Harz. In town, museums and trails lead through different chapters of the town’s history; in the Ilse Valley to the southwest, the Ilse River and its waterfalls shape the landscape. This gives you a choice of culture, a tour of the town and days on hiking trails during your stay.

Art Casting and Industrial History
Located in central Ilsenburg, the Art Casting Museum uses an interactive exhibition to showcase the development of the town’s ironworks industry, particularly its art foundry. The history of iron art casting spans from its beginnings in the 16th century, with stove plates, to art castings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed in the former manor of the count’s farm estate, later known as the domain. Here, you can explore both the history of a local industry and the works of art created through ironworking.
The Ilsenburg Iron Trail offers a different perspective on the subject. This educational trail follows the town’s history from iron production and processing in the early Middle Ages to the present day. Its guiding idea, “from ore to metal,” makes the material’s journey a common thread along the route. If you prefer to learn about historical backgrounds outdoors, this trail offers a different focus from the museum’s interactive exhibition.
Ilse Valley and Trails in the Harz
The Ilse Valley lies southwest of Ilsenburg. The Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail runs along the Ilse; the cascading Ilse Falls are among the trail’s distinctive natural features. The Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail leads through the valley from Ilsenburg to the Brocken and offers the opportunity to walk through all the habitats of Harz National Park on picturesque trails. For your holiday planning, this makes a longer hike from the town to the Brocken a practical option. From May to October, HVB bus route 274, the “Ilsetaler,” also connects Ilsenburg with numerous hiking destinations in Harz National Park.
High above the town’s rooftops, the legendary Ilsestein rises 160 metres above the valley. A child-friendly hike there starts at Blochhauer, follows the Ilse, crosses a bridge and then continues along a nature trail to the Ilsestein. This route description gives families a specific itinerary for a shared hike; the Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail, meanwhile, extends from Ilsenburg to the Brocken and offers a different choice of route.
Discover the Town’s History
If you would like to explore Ilsenburg on a shorter route, a virtual town tour follows a roughly 3 km QR code route through the town’s history. It takes about an hour. The Ilsetal National Park Visitor Centre on the southern edge of town has an exhibition about life in the beech forest; there is also something to discover in the centre’s garden. A two-hour guided tour covers the history of the town and monastery and leads through the town centre, exploring the history and culture of Ilsenburg Abbey Church.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Ilsenburg, you can consider whether culture or nature should take up more of your holiday. This lets you shape your plans around the kind of stay you have in mind.
You can also explore the nearby places of Drübeck and Darlingerode.
