Veckenstedt: Village Scene and Local History
In Veckenstedt, farmhouses, orchards and numerous mill channels with fords shape the village. The village’s history also goes back a long way: Veckenstedt was first documented in 1040 and was administered for a long time as an estate belonging to the noble family of Veckenstedt. The Illse connects Veckenstedt and Wasserleben, giving the two villages a shared geographical feature. The exhibition topics and local history add cultural points of interest to the landscape.
Wasserleben: Park and Bathing History
In Wasserleben, two historical dates stand out in the village’s history. In 1852, the estate’s tenant at the time, Henneberg, laid out a park in the English landscape style. The Ilsestrandbad was built by local residents on their own initiative in 1938 and completely renovated in 1997. The park and the community effort behind the swimming area represent different chapters of local history: landscape design in the 19th century and civic engagement in the 20th century.
Border History in Stapelburg and Abbenrode
Stapelburg’s eventful history is presented at the local history museum. At the exit from the village towards Bad Harzburg is the former underground command bunker of the GDR border troops, one of the local attractions. A memorial on the L85 commemorates the opening of the inner-German border on 11 November 1989. The Jungborn health resort is also part of Stapelburg’s history: it brought the village renown from 1896 onwards.
In Abbenrode, the local history museum provides information about former border security facilities. The history of the border can therefore be encountered in different ways and places: as a topic in the Abbenrode museum and as a specific commemorative date at the Stapelburg memorial. Trails and Mill Day in Abbenrode
A 1.5-kilometre mill walking trail starts in Abbenrode. Its length is a useful point of reference if you want to structure your day and include a manageable walk. The wider Harz destination
The wider Harz destination offers additional nature and hiking opportunities. Harz National Park covers 24,732 hectares, around ten percent of the entire Harz region. It has 560 kilometres of signposted trails leading to particularly scenic viewpoints. At 1,141 metres, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz and lies within the national park’s core zone; the Brocken Railway offers a way to reach the summit by train.
Eight visitor centres and national park houses provide information about the park and offer hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings.
