Manor History in Veckenstedt
Veckenstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1040 and was run for a long time as a manor estate by the noble family of Veckenstedt. A local history museum is located on the old estate. In 2002, part of the former stables of the manor estate was converted into a local history room and developed into a museum. This brings local history and the later use of part of the estate buildings together in one place. A new exhibition on local topics also opens at the museum every year. The pond festival takes place every year at the Veckenstedt pond complex. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the event date in advance. More Places and Themes in the Northern Harz
In the Northern Harz, places such as Wasserleben, Stapelburg and Abbenrode add to the cultural and historical themes. In Wasserleben, residents built the Ilsestrandbad lido on their own initiative in 1938; it was completely renovated in 1997. Also in Wasserleben, the estate’s tenant at the time, Henneberg, laid out a park in the English landscape style in 1852. The Illse connects Veckenstedt and Wasserleben. History in Stapelburg
The local history room in Stapelburg presents the eventful history of the village. At the village exit towards Bad Harzburg is the former underground command bunker of the GDR border troops, one of the local sights. A monument on the L85 commemorates the opening of the inner German border on 11 November 1989. The Jungborn health resort, which made Stapelburg well known from 1896 onwards, is also part of the village’s history. Together, these examples illustrate different historical themes: local history, the bunker’s former role in border defence and the commemoration of a specific date.
Mills in Abbenrode
Abbenrode also adds its own mill-related themes to the Northern Harz. Every year on Whit Monday, the Otto Mill is put into operation for German Mill Day.
