Landschaftspark Bruch is located in the heart of the district. It was created with a great deal of community involvement; the first trees were planted during the GDR era. The park is home to more than 200 woody plants and rare species. The plants, as well as the story of the park’s creation, are central to a visit. The mountains on the immediate outskirts of Darlingerode are also known as the “Darlingeröder Schweiz” (Darlingerode Switzerland). The name is a local landscape designation and adds another distinctive local reference to the impressions offered by the trail and park.
Church, assembly site and local history room
Darlingerode’s St. Lawrence Church dates back to the Middle Ages. The stone circle at the Altenrode cemetery represents a different historical era: it is a pre-Christian and early medieval assembly site where court was once held. The local history room in Darlingerode’s Komturhof adds another perspective, with local archaeology and a living-space exhibit depicting the turn of the century. The Kunstgussmuseum, centrally located in Ilsenburg, presents the historical development of Ilsenburg’s ironworks industry, particularly its art foundry, in an interactive exhibition. The exhibition spans iron art casting from the 16th century, including stove plates, to art casting in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed in the former manor of the count’s estate, later known as the domain. Industrial history and the historic building’s context are two closely related aspects of the museum.
The trails in Ilsenburg also offer a range of themes. The Ilsenburg Iron Trail is an educational trail through the town’s history, from iron production and processing in the early Middle Ages to the present day. Its theme is the journey “from ore to metal.” The Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail runs through the Ilse Valley from Ilsenburg to the Brocken; its idyllic paths take you through all the habitats of Harz National Park. A family-friendly hike to the Ilsestein starts at the Blochhauer, follows the Ilse, crosses a bridge and then continues along a nature trail to the Ilsestein. The rock formation rises high above the rooftops of Ilsenburg, 160 meters above the valley.

A two-hour guided tour explores the history of Ilsenburg and its monastery, leading through the town center to discover the history and culture of Ilsenburg Monastery Church. The Ilsetal National Park Visitor Center on the southern edge of Ilsenburg has an exhibition about life in the beech forest; there is also more to discover in the center’s garden.
