Cathedral and castles: discover cultural history

Naumburg Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2018. It is considered one of the most significant cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages. Its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are regarded as unique worldwide. Anyone interested in architecture and art history will find a notable highlight here during a visit to the Burgenland District.

Neuenburg Castle also offers a glimpse into history: it was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer. Today, the castle is a major stop on the Romanesque Road. Goseck Castle houses an information centre about the solar observatory. Its exhibition explains the excavations in Goseck and the phenomenon of circular enclosures. Sky Trails and the Bronze Age

The Sky Trails run through the Burgenland District and lead to archaeological and astronomical highlights associated with the Nebra Sky Disc and the Goseck solar observatory. The Goseck circular enclosure is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic observations of the sky. The monument, around 75 metres across, was fully excavated and accurately reconstructed at its original site.

The Nebra Ark is a modern visitor centre at the site where the Nebra Sky Disc was found. It offers guided tours, hands-on activities and special exhibitions. A digital planetarium presents a 22-minute show about astronomical knowledge in the Bronze Age. Alongside the reconstructed site at Goseck, visitors can therefore choose to explore archaeology and astronomy through an exhibition or a planetarium visit.

Routes and practical visitor information

Visiting Mittelberg is free of charge. You can get there on foot, by bicycle, by e-scooter or on an authorised scheduled bus; access by private motor vehicle is not permitted. There is free parking at the entrance to Goseck. The solar observatory can be reached via a 350-metre-long paved path. This information can help you take account of the different sites and their respective access conditions when planning your visit.

Memleben Abbey can also be included in a cycling tour: it is accessible via the Unstrut Cycle Path. At the level of the abbey complex, a small bridge crosses the Unstrut and provides access to the abbey. A new education centre was inaugurated there on 28 May 2026. It is intended to serve as an out-of-school learning venue for groups, a venue for specialist lectures and a bookable seminar venue.

Since 28 May 2026, visitors with or without physical disabilities have been able to visit the outdoor area, the exhibition areas on the ground floor of the cloister buildings, the refectory and the exhibition on the upper floor of the east wing. The Wine Route is considered one of the Burgenland District’s most important tourist routes, and terraced vineyards are among its defining landscape features.
