Culture and History
St. George’s Church forms the center of Nebra’s old-town market square. Its foundation dates back to 1416, and the late Gothic building was constructed from Nebra sandstone. Inside, visitors can see mortuary shields dating from 1678/79; guided tours are available on request.
The Nebra Ark combines archaeology and astronomy with guided tours, activity programs, and special exhibitions. In the planetarium, it presents a 24-minute show about the Bronze Age universe beneath a 360-degree dome, beginning twice per hour.
Nebra Castle Ruins preserve the remains of a medieval hilltop castle. These include a residential tower, the remains of chapels with frescoes, and vaulted wine cellars. From the ruins, views extend across the Unstrut Valley toward Memleben and over the Unstrut floodplains. Below the castle ruins lies the municipal vineyard, where Souvignier Gris, Regent, and Cabernet Cortis are cultivated.
At the Memleben Monastery and Imperial Palace Museum, visitors can see original wall fragments from two churches and a late Romanesque crypt. A viewing platform overlooks the floor plan and remains of the Ottonian church from the 10th century. The museum conveys the historical importance of the site, monastic architecture, and Benedictine daily life.
Nature and Trails
The Trias-Tor hiking area connects Nebra with Wendelstein, Memleben, and Wangen via a 32-kilometer circular route as well as separate eastern and western loops. The Nebra–Wangen loop is 11 kilometers long and has 250 meters of elevation gain.
Around half of the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Geo-Nature Park is protected through landscape, nature conservation, and Natura 2000 designations. From spring to late autumn, the Geo-Nature Park offers extensive hiking and cycling on developed cycle paths. Its landscapes include species-rich forests, river floodplains, orchid-rich dry grasslands, and historic vineyards.
The Sky Disc Cycle Path is approximately 73 kilometers long and connects the discovery site of the Nebra Sky Disc with the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale). Cycle paths along the Unstrut between Naumburg and Nebra are signposted as Sky Trails.
Nature Observation along the Unstrut
The Nebra Bee Education Garden is located almost directly on the banks of the Unstrut. Guided tours by experienced beekeepers are offered by prior registration. The garden includes an insect hotel where visitors can learn about nesting opportunities for wild bees. A wetland habitat serves to observe a diverse range of animals and plants.
Wine and Getting There
The Nebra Wine Cellar is a restored, vaulted tasting room that originally belonged to the old castle complex. The tastings include white and red wines accompanied by food and side dishes.
