Erxleben: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Culture and History
Erxleben can be explored through its history of churches, castles and palaces, as well as through its natural surroundings and cycle paths. The Schlosskirche St. Godehardt was built between 1564 and 1580 and contains works of art from four centuries, including a carved Baroque altar, an elaborate pulpit and a preacher's chair by Tobias Wilhelmi the Elder, the organ by Heinrich Herbst, and an epitaph for Joachim I von Alvensleben.
The Hausmann Tower was built after 1219 as a stone gate tower with a drawbridge over the outer castle moat. It is the oldest surviving building of Erxleben Castle and is two-thirds Romanesque. Erxleben II Palace was created from 1526 onwards on the foundations of the Neue Kemenate dating from 1430. The Hinterschloss, a southern side wing of Erxleben II Palace, was added in Renaissance forms in 1563. West of Erxleben II Palace stands the former brewery or malt house, which was built by 1563 and later converted into a residence. The German Foundation for Monument Protection supported conservation work on Erxleben II Palace. The palace complex also includes a three-storey front palace, which was renovated by 1682. Erxleben II Palace is considered a monument of supraregional importance.
The biography of singer Albert Niemann is also connected with the town: he was born on 15 January 1831 at the Gasthaus zur Post in Erxleben.
Museums and Events
The museum in the pharmacy presents a pharmaceutical collection covering the history of pharmacies from the early 17th century to the GDR era. It includes objects from the Erxleben pharmacy, which is considered one of the oldest pharmacies in the region. The Schlosskirche hosts concerts, church services, readings, exhibitions and guided tours.
Nature and Landscape
Near Erxleben, the Bartenslebener Forest and the Erxleben Forest form a contiguous woodland of more than 10 square kilometres. The Bartenslebener Forest nature reserve contains natural beech forests and oak-hornbeam forests, which are described as particularly picturesque. Large sinkholes in the Bartenslebener Forest are geological formations created by the dissolution of the gypsum beneath them. The forest provides a habitat for cranes and greenshanks. The nature reserve has been designated an EU Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive, “Bartenslebener Forst im Aller-Hügelland.” Near Erxleben, the Bartenslebener Forest also offers opportunities for extended walks.
The central part of the Börde district is a hilly landscape that includes the Erxleben-Hörsingen ridge.
Cycling
Erxleben/Uhrsleben railway station is a hub of the Ferkeltaxe cycle path project, with connections to Erxleben and Uhrsleben. The Ferkeltaxe cycle path was planned as a 28-kilometre panoramic cycle route along the disused Eilsleben–Haldensleben railway line; Erxleben is one of the participating municipalities. Sections of the Ferkeltaxe cycle path run along the former railway line.
