Culture and History
The Museum of the City of Zerbst/Anhalt is housed in a former Franciscan monastery. The “Catherine II” collection is a branch of the museum and is dedicated to the life and work of Catherine II. St. Nicolai stands in Zerbst’s market square as the ruins of what was once Anhalt’s largest hall church.
A prison cell with historic inscriptions from the 17th century is a reminder of the city’s university history. The museum presents the history of Zerbst in the context of the Reformation and education. Regular tours of the palace are available exclusively as guided tours or accompanied walks.
Despite wartime damage, St. Bartholomäi remains a Protestant parish church. Inside are tomb slabs for princely families, frescoes, and a panel painting by Lucas Cranach the Younger depicting the baptism of Christ in the Jordan. The museum’s refectory and chapter house preserve ornamented reminders of the monastic period. The Museum of the City of Zerbst offers guided tours of its permanent and special exhibitions and also holds lectures on historical topics.
Getting Around
The palace gardens cover 153,900 square metres and include a palace pond. The Zerbster Land between the Elbe and Fläming offers around 40 kilometres of cycle paths through river meadows, fields, meadows, and forests. The Fläming Cycle Route connects the EuroVelo Route R1 near Bad Belzig with the Elbe Cycle Route at Walternienburg or Dessau-Roßlau.
A walk along the approximately four-kilometre-long medieval town wall offers an opportunity to explore the city’s history. Near Garitz, the Fläming Cycle Route branches off via Walternienburg towards Zerbst.
Practical Information
There is an e-bike charging station with two charging points on Schlossfreiheit in Zerbst/Anhalt. It is located near Zerbst Palace, the palace gardens, St. Bartholomäi, and the city centre. Bicycle racks and the museum branch housing the “Catherine II” collection are located opposite the charging station.

Asparagus is grown on sandy soils in the Vorfläming region and near the Elbe and is associated with visits to Zerbst/Anhalt.
