Culture and History
Köthen Palace stands north of the old town on an island at the southern edge of the Ziethen lowlands. From 1717 to 1723, it was Johann Sebastian Bach’s workplace as court kapellmeister. The palace serves as a cultural center and as a center for preserving Baroque music.
The Erlebniswelt Deutsche Sprache exhibition at Köthen Palace is dedicated to the history of the German language and linguistic phenomena, using the history of the Fruitful Society of the 17th century as its basis. St. James’s Church contains an almost original Ladegast organ and the princely crypt with 40 elaborately decorated coffins belonging to the House of Anhalt-Köthen.
The Hahnemann House is Samuel Hahnemann’s former residence and former workplace; the flue from his laboratory has been preserved inside. The Naumann Museum preserves an almost unchanged bird collection from the early 19th century, with around 1,300 specimens in 113 original display cases. It also contains a unique complete scholarly work that has been preserved at its original location worldwide. The Köthen Information Center is located in the former princely palace.
Nature
The palace park offers walks among old trees and along the palace moat all year round. Its design evolved from a formal Renaissance garden into an English landscape park; at the same time, it is part of the Garden Dreams park network in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Köthen Zoo is located in the heart of the pheasantry. There are seats at regular intervals throughout the zoo. A family visit to the Köthen Zoo is possible in both summer and winter.
