Nature

The Mulde floodplain above Lake Muldestausee comprises riparian forest, meadows, wooded areas, flood channels and oxbow waters. At the inlet of Lake Muldestausee, the Mulde Bridge near Pouch offers a viewpoint over the river delta formed behind the inlet structure. The ice-free inlet area is a concentration area for northern waterfowl in winter, including goosanders, tufted ducks and pochards. Muldestausee is also located on the edge of the Dübener Heide Nature Park, where a valuable biotope provides a habitat for rare and endangered animal species.

A hike from the inlet of Lake Muldestausee follows the upper slope edge of the Mulde Valley and opens up wide views over the Mulde floodplain and the former Goitzsche mining area.

Water and cycle paths

Sailing regattas as well as dragon boat, canoe and rowing competitions take place on the 6.3-square-kilometre water surface of Lake Muldestausee. Numerous cycling and hiking trails run around Lake Muldestausee. The Coal-Steam-Light Cycle Route can be combined with the Elbe Cycle Route, the EuroVelo Route R1, the Berlin–Leipzig Cycle Route and the Mulde Valley Cycle Route to form a larger circular route.

Culture and history

The HAUS AM SEE on the northern shore of Lake Muldestausee presents a permanent exhibition with more than 80 specimens of native animals and provides information about the reservoir’s former open-cast mining history. The Red Tower in Pouch was built in the 13th century and is 30 metres high. Its viewing platform is reached via more than 105 steps and overlooks the Goitzsche Landscape Park, Pouch, Lake Muldestausee and the Dübener Heide.

Lake Muldestausee was created in the 1970s by flooding the former Muldenstein lignite open-cast mine after the Mulde had been diverted.

Regional cuisine

The Schachtbaude “Pannenkoek” is located above Muldestausee on the COAL | STEAM | LIGHT Cycle Route and offers pancakes, poffertjes and regional meat products made in-house. The Gröberner Seekate serves fresh and smoked fish specialities, homemade game sausage, fresh eggs, selected wines and products from the Dübener Heide.
