Accommodation in Saarbrücken Regional Association
Industrial heritage, Baroque buildings and extensive woodland give the Saarbrücken Regional Association a variety of different characters. A visit can take you into the history of mining and technology, to historic buildings or along paths through forests and border country. When looking for a holiday apartment, it therefore helps to start by asking which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Exploring industrial history
The Völklingen Ironworks is an impressive testament to the industrial heritage and technological history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its visitor route is more than 7,000 metres long and leads through the industrial monument, the Möller Hall and up to a viewing platform at the blast furnace. If you are interested in industrial facilities and their history, this offers a specific focus for your stay. The length of the route is also a useful guide when planning your outings.
The former Göttelborn mine is also a symbol of structural change. In Quierschied, the surface facilities, old headframes and imposing winding tower shape the landscape of the former mining industry. In Bildstock, the Rechtsschutzsaal is considered the birthplace of the trade union movement in the Saar region. Together, these places offer different ways to explore industrial and social history, without telling the same story.
Baroque architecture and building history in Saarbrücken
The history of Saarbrücken can be read in buildings from different periods. In the underground castle complex, visitors can descend into the medieval and Renaissance sections and see the casemates. The castle has undergone several transformations: a castle developed into a Renaissance palace in the 17th century; after it was destroyed, a new Baroque residence was built in the 18th century.
Another striking example is the Baroque ensemble of Ludwigskirche, Ludwigsplatz and the surrounding palaces and officials’ residences, completed in 1775. Since 2021, Ludwigskirche has also been a pilgrimage station on the Way of St James and on the “Sternenweg” project. If you are interested in historic architecture and religious pilgrimage routes, you can take these aspects into account when choosing your outings. In Saarbrücken, the Stengel circuit follows the architectural legacy of Baroque master builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel; the signposted Saarbrücken loop leads to notable points around the city.
Charles V had the Old Bridge built in 1546; it is one of Saarbrücken’s oldest structures and connects Alt-Saarbrücken with St. Johann. A landing stage for Saarbrücken’s passenger boats is located right next to the bridge. Sightseeing cruises on the Saar are offered from there during the summer months. This makes it possible to combine a visit to a historic landmark with a trip along the river.
Forests, walks and family outings
The Urwald forest on the city’s doorstep is a protected woodland area covering more than 1,000 hectares. You can explore it on a guided hike with the forest ranger; it is also accessible by Saarbahn. Walks and hikes are the main attractions in the Brennender Berg local recreation area in Sulzbach. The Ruhbachtal also offers room for walks and extended hikes. If you are looking for nature trails rather than architectural history, there are several different options to choose from.
The Franco-German Garden features a large pond, waterfowl and numerous tree species, as well as pedal boats and a water playground for children. The boats and playground offer families specific ways to enjoy time outdoors. You can make the garden a destination in its own right when planning your holiday, combining wildlife observation with activities for children.
Cycling routes and border country
You can also discover the region from a different perspective by bike. One of the most scenic sections of the Saarland Cycle Route runs through the Warndt. The Velo-visavis cycle routes are ideal for exploring the Saarland-Lorraine border region. These routes offer a different experience from city walks or hikes: the focus is on the landscape and border region rather than individual buildings.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore start by weighing up the outings you want to take: industrial heritage and urban history, walks and hikes, an outing with children or cycling tours each offer a different focus. Find the relevant local pages within the regional association under Saarbrücken, Sulzbach/Saar, Völklingen, Kleinblittersdorf and Püttlingen.
