Saarpfalz District: Nature, Culture and Mining History

Cultural history from antiquity to mining

The history of Kirkel Castle reaches far back: it was first mentioned in a document in 1075, abandoned during the Thirty Years’ War and finally destroyed in 1689. Near Blieskastel, the Gollenstein recalls an even more distant past. It is about 5,000 years old and is considered one of Germany’s oldest cultural monuments.

The European Cultural Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim offers a different kind of archaeological discovery. It covers around 70 hectares on both sides of the German-French border in the Blies Valley. One of its special features is the reconstructed burial mound of the Princess of Reinheim, which visitors can enter. The park thus combines a large cultural landscape with a tangible witness to the past.

In Homburg, individual visitors can tour the Schlossberg Caves across three levels. The Vauban Fortress can be explored with an interactive “Lauschtour” audio guide. For families and other travellers who appreciate different ways of engaging with history, these are two distinct experiences: a visit underground and a guided tour to listen to.

The Saarland Mining Museum in Bexbach showcases the changing history of mining in Saarland, along with old and new extraction techniques, in an extensive underground demonstration mine. If you would rather explore mining heritage along trails, the Höcherberg Mining Trails offer four full-day hikes and the Haldenschleife trail. It leads through meadows and forests to mining relics in Bexbach.

Experience orchid trails and landscapes

In the orchid area of Gersheim, parts of the area have been protected since 1957. The Orchid Trail introduces visitors at ten stops to special species, their local distribution and the preservation of their habitats. A walk is therefore not just about plants, but also about where they grow and why protecting their habitats is part of the picture.

There are two routes of different lengths to choose from: the short circular trail is 1.8 km long and has seven stops. The longer hiking trail to the limestone spring marsh is 2.7 km long and has ten stops. These details can help you gauge the scale of your planned outing; the two routes differ in both length and number of stops. The orchid area is accessible on Biosphere Bus 501, which runs to Gersheim bus station. From there, it is about a 30-minute walk.

Make hiking and cycling part of your trip

The Bliessteig, a certified long-distance hiking trail, begins in Sarreguemines, France. Its first two daily stages pass through the municipality of Mandelbachtal; the trail then continues through the Saarpfalz District to Bexbach. If you would like to combine your trip with several days of hiking, you can take this route into account when choosing which places to visit.

There are also named cycling routes: the Saarpfalz District is responsible for leading the way on signage for the Sieben-Weiher-Runde, Adebar-Runde, Bickenalb-Runde, European Mill Cycle Route, Bliesgau Cycle Route, Glan-Blies Route and Vélo-Vis-à-vis network of routes. Together with the hiking trails, these offer a choice of ways to explore the region.

Combine places and travel interests

Another destination for cultural history is the Altenkirch family’s Museum of Rural Everyday Life in Rubenheim. It is housed in a former inn and farmhouse dating from the first half of the 18th century. The exhibits focus on the everyday lives of farming families, day labourers, craftspeople and workers in the 19th and 20th centuries.
