Nature
The geological educational trail in Kirkel was created in 1983. It begins with a map of the Saar region and the locations of the displayed rocks. The Wasserfelsen is a bedding spring that releases dripping water in summer and winter; in freezing conditions, icicles several metres long can form there.
The Kirkeler Forest is home to the only climbable red sandstone cliffs in Saarland. The forest also contains bizarre rock formations made of Middle Buntsandstein. Frauenbrunnen is a spring in the Kirkeler Forest that is well known far beyond the area. Taubental is designated as the largest core zone of the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Hiking and cycling
The Kirkeler Tafeltour is an 8-kilometre circular hiking trail that passes rock formations, viewpoints and Frauenbrunnen. The 24-kilometre Adebar Route runs around Kirkel, passing Kirkel Castle, meadows, fields and the Blies River. It is largely free of motor traffic, mainly uses paved paths and has only little ascent.
