Culture

An urban stele trail connects six central sights, begins at the Völklingen Ironworks and provides brief historical information in three languages.

The Völklingen Ironworks is the only completely preserved ironworks in the world dating from the heyday of industrialization and, at the same time, the first industrial monument from this era to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The site covers six hectares and is a unique monument to the production of pig iron in Western Europe. It has largely been preserved as it was originally built; since production ceased in 1986, there have been only minor additions or demolitions. The World Heritage site is used for museum purposes, cultural events and exhibitions.

The visitor route includes enormous machines in the Blower Hall, six blast furnaces in an open-access ironworks park and the site's distinctive inclined lift.

Trails

The Saar Cycle Route through Völklingen is described as easy and runs parallel to the Saar toward its confluence at Konz. The Köllertal Cycle Route follows a former railway line from Völklingen to Püttlingen and onward via Heusweiler to Mangelshausen. It is described as easy to moderately difficult and is approximately 21 kilometres long.

The Völklingen circular city route is a signposted 56-kilometre route that begins and ends at “Alter Bahnhof Völklingen”.

Nature

There are more than 200 kilometres of signposted hiking trails in the wooded areas around Völklingen. A 42-kilometre cross-border Huguenot Cultural Trail runs through the Warndt area of Völklingen. The Warndt Forest in Völklingen extends toward France. Hikes through the Warndt Forest offer wide views of Lorraine.

Visiting

The Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site is a five-minute walk from Völklingen railway station. Most areas of the World Heritage Site are accessible via ramps and lifts; the viewing platform at a height of 45 metres is the exception.

Guided tours of the Völklingen Ironworks and its exhibitions are offered in German, English, French, Italian, Greek, Russian, Turkish, Arabic and sign language. The World Heritage Site includes a café in the water tower and a beer garden.
