Landscape
Berndorf lies in the Hillesheim Limestone Basin. Fossil-rich Devonian formations and nearby volcanic features shape the landscape. The local geopath leads through Berndorf and to the Rauheck quarry west of the village, where fossils from the Middle Devonian can be found on the spoil heaps.
Berndorf is also located on the eighth stage of the Eifelsteig long-distance hiking trail. This stage runs from Mirbach via Berndorf to Hillesheim.
Hiking
The Berndorf Cultural Trail follows the Stations of the Cross from the fortified church to the parish church. Along the way, it passes the Plague Cross, the Weinberg quarry, the Marien Chapel, the Lehmkaul biotope, the Jischbühl and the Indulgence Cross.
The Berndorf Cultural Trail offers views towards Nürburg, the Nürburgring and Arensberg. At individual points along the trail, QR codes provide information about local sights.
Culture and History
The old fortified church was inaugurated in 1965 as a memorial to Berndorf's war dead from both world wars.
The Indulgence Cross is probably a niche cross made of red sandstone dating from the 16th century. The Sellert Cross stands in the forest north of Berndorf and is connected with the murder of a count's rent collector.
The Weinberg hill fort in the Berndorf/Kerpen cadastral area is a Late La Tène-period fortification approximately 300 metres long.
Practical Information
At Backes Eck, hikers will find a rest area, Kneipp basins for exercising their arms and feet, and posted maps for the onward route. The historic earth cellar at Backes Eck is used as a meeting and exhibition space.
Bus routes 538 and 539 connect Hillesheim/ZOB with the Berndorf, Am Blumerich stop. Parking for the Berndorf Cultural Trail is available at the fortified church on Kiefernweg and at St. Peter's Church on Kirchstraße.
